DIRECTV to Show Full Feature-Length Film Before Release
DIRECTV is screening a Hollywood feature-length film for its customers before the movie’s theatrical release. It’s the first time DIRECTV satellite TV provider has done something like this, and it’s creating quite the buzz around the entertainment blogosphere this week.
“The Burning Plain”, starring Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger, debuts in theaters Sept. 17, but will be available for an advanced screening on DIRECTV Cinema from Aug. 21 to Sept. 16. DIRECTV is offering the drama in its new Blu-ray-esq 1080p high definition format, or in standard definition, for a low of $9.99 for SD.
DIRECTV’s Marketing VP Sarah Lyons said this is just one more way the company is enhancing its platform to deliver programming that can’t be found anywhere else.
Whether or not you’re a fan of the romance-drama genre, you have to admit, being first in line to catch a big Hollywood flick is right up there with winning your Fantasy Football season and finding that extra 20 bucks in your pocket. You just feel little luckier than the next guy.
And it may be a sign of things to come.
DIRECTV hasn’t said whether they’ll continue this trend; they’ll most likely wait to see how fans respond to this trial. But if all goes well, we can probably expect to see this again – and with comedies, action, foreign films and more.
One blogger speculated whether this was the end of the exclusivity theaters have enjoyed with new releases for years. Maybe so. With DIRECTV’s stunning all-digital picture and sound, endless programming choices and award-winning customer service, it’s hard to find a better way to watch movies.
I, for one, will be ditching the crowds, the overpriced popcorn and the sticky floors, and catching this picture on DIRECTV Cinema.
