DIRECTV New Satellite Launch Successful - DIRECTV-11

As the second of three next-generation satellites built by Boeing, the DIRECTV-11 satellite was launched into space on March 19, 2008 on a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL rocket from the Sea Launch’s equatorial launch site in the Pacific Ocean. Sea Launch Company, LLC is located in Long Beach, California and provides DIRECTV, as well as other companies, a cost-effective way to launch their commercial communications satellites. 

The satellite quickly began its work and by March 20^th, 2008 the Boeing Company, which is located in St. Louis, Missouri, received its first on-orbit signals from the DIRECTV-11 satellite. The DIRECTV-11 satellite is a 13,058 pound dish with a wingspan of more than 157 feet and has technological capabilities to provide a concentrated broadcast signal to a specific market. 

Through DIRECTV-11, which is a Boeing 702 satellite, has a level of technology onboard that will allow the DIRECTV HD Package to continue offering the best in high-definition television. Combined with the DIRECTV 10 satellite, which was launched in July of 2007 and enabled customers to get approximately 90 national HDTV channels, the DIRECTV-11 will give DIRECTV the capability to offer 150 national HDTV channels, in addition to their 1,500 local channels. The third next-generation satellite, the DIRECTV-12 satellite, will be held as an on-ground spare. 

For 15 years, DIRECTV has worked side-by-side with Boeing to create the best in satellite television. Since 1993, when DIRECTV 1 was launched, the collaboration of the two companies has continued to provide bigger and better satellites, signals, and systems for DIRECTV’s 15.1 million subscriber base, which only continues to rise. 

The two satellites, DIRECTV-10 and DIRECTV-11 will be co-located with the SPACEWAY satellites for simple, one-way broadcasting. Even with the addition of the new satellites that have the capacity for 3-2ay internet service, broadband internet service is not available through DIRECTV, although it may be a possibility in the near future. Until then, DIRECTV has partnered with local internet providers to give customers the best deals possible.

MountainWest Sports Joins DIRECTV

Viewers of DIRECTV will soon have more sports viewing options. News was recently announced that DIRECTV and the MountainWest Sports Network have reached an agreement for The Mtn. to be launched on DirecTV. As fans are already aware, The MountainWest Sports Network; commonly referred to as The Mtn., premiered in September of 2006 as the first network that was completely devoted to a college athletic conference. The Mtn. covers annual events from the Division I Mountain West Conference including basketball, football and even Olympic sports. In addition, pre and post game analysis as well as news programming and featured programming regarding MWC athletics are covered.

The Mtn. will be launched by DIRECTV at some time during 2008; however, it is expected to air absolutely no later than the first of September. It is anticipated that broadcasting will begin sometime in the late summer, which will give viewers the opportunity to begin seeing events just in time for the 2008 fall football season. At the current time programming package information and channel position have not been made available; however, as the date of the launch grows closer, this information is expected to be released.

The Mountain West Conference was created in 1999 and since that time it has become well known for a strong dedication to intercollegiate athletic excellence. Nine Division I institutions are included in the Mountain West Conference. These institutions include the University of New Mexico, the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado State University, Brigham Young University, San Diego State University, UNLV, TCU, the University of Wyoming and the University of Utah.

Viewers will gain the advantage to catch up on all of their favorite events, especially those from BYU, which the Mountain network has exclusive rights to broadcast. Fans of the network enjoy the fact that more live sporting events of the Mountain West Conference are covered by The Mtn. than any other network. In addition, in just the last few years, The Mtn. has become known to be home to some of the most experienced sports commentators currently on television. As a result, fans are able to enjoy highly specialized conference sports events. Prior to this time, The Mtn. was only carried by Comcast Cable and only Cox and Comcast cable subscribers were able to watch MWC team coverage on television.

Now subscribers to DIRECTV will have the opportunity to see more coverage of Mountain West Conference events than have ever previously been available. In fact, this deal will provide coverage to nearly 17 million more viewers. The deal is not only good news for viewers; however. The nine institutions that belong to the conference are expected to also benefit tremendously from the increased exposure.

The announcement comes as welcome news for fans who have long wished that The Mtn. was available as part of DIRECTV subscription. It is anticipated that DISH TV fans may be inspired to make the switch to DIRECTV in order to be able to pick up coverage of The Mtn. by DIRECTV.

DIRECTV Passes by Dish Network in Space

DIRECTV dealt another blow to Dish Network today as it successfully placed its latest satellite into orbit. The communications satellite, DIRECTV-11, is in the proper orbit and is operational. This exciting news comes less then a week after Dish Network failed to set its own HD satellite (AMC-14) into the proper orbit. With Dish Network coming up like a lame duck, there is no doubt that DIRECTV will continue it’s dominance in the high definition market.

Today DIRECTV rubbed some salt in their wounds by successfully extending its HD capacity to 150 national channels and an amazing 1,500 local high definition channels. That is more then double what Dish Network has the capacity for.

The DIRECTV-11 satellite that was delivered by Boeing just a couple months ago was set in place by a Sea Launch consortium Zenit rocket from the Pacific ocean at 3:48pm. DIRECTV-11 is in communications with South African ground crews and will be ready to go later this year. This satellite is among the largest Ka-band satellites (and most powerful) ever built. The tandem of DIRECTV-11 and DIRECTV-10 which is already in orbit will no doubt allow the DIRECTV HD programming to remain on top of the competition.
