EL SEGUNDO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 13, 2007–DIRECTV, Inc., the nation’s leading satellite television service provider, along with leading key entertainment and educational brands such as Mattel, Nickelodeon, Leap Frog and PBS KIDS(R) are stimulating the minds of TV viewers across the country with the launch of Game Lounge, a new gaming channel now available exclusively on DIRECTV.

In addition, DIRECTV has currently entered into a long-term, exclusive partnership with Mattel for the use of all of its brands, including Hot Wheels(R), Barbie(R) and UNO(R), to develop a line of children’s games available exclusively for the Game Lounge platform.

The Game Lounge platform consists of several different categories including puzzle, word, card, educational and arcade style games that are based upon key consumer and entertainment brands including games surrounding Nickelodeon properties like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of Juju, a soon to be launched Nickelodeon animated television series, which stems from the video game. “Barbie, Hot Wheels and UNO are renowned brands that have always been at the forefront of industry trends - from fashion and entertainment to technology and innovation,” said Cynthia Neiman, vice president of marketing, Mattel Games. “We are excited to embrace this new gaming movement by partnering with DIRECTV on the launch of its new gaming channel.”

DIRECTV was expected to report an uptick in subscribers and an improvement in financial numbers for the fourth quarter. The satellite TV giant did that and much more.

DIRECTV reported 275,000 net customer additions for the three-month period that ended Dec. 31, putting the service’s overall subscriber count at 15.95 million.

Gross subscriber additions for the satellite TV giant numbered 1.021 million, an increase of 6 percent when compared to fourth quarter 2005. The net subscriber additions and gross customer counts met most - and beat some - Wall Street expectations.
The subscriber numbers were helped by a drop in monthly churn, which went from 1.7 percent during the same period last year to 1.57 percent for fourth quarter 2006. That represented the biggest improvement in churn figures in more than three years, the company said.

Also, during a conference call with analysts, DIRECTV executives said about 200,000 customers were upgraded to HDTV service during the fourth quarter. DIRECTV CEO Chase Carey said he expects 2007 subscriber growth to mirror what happened last year.

Carey also said this year will be a big deal for the satellite TV company’s move into a robust HDTV slate. The expanded HDTV offering is relying on the launch of a new satellite, set for the second half of the year.

DIRECTV said fourth quarter net income more than doubled to $356 million when compared to the same period last year. Fourth quarter revenues increased 16 percent to $4.18 billion, the company said.’

‘It’s no surprise that high-def TV had a killer year in 2006 as sales skyrocketed both online and at retailers nationwide. With the popularity of the technology reaching new levels, some researchers have projected more than 3.2 million flat-panel HDTVs to be sold to U.S. consumers during the past several weeks.

So with all those new TV sets in American homes, what can viewers expect from HDTVin 2007?

According to one of our favorite new HDTV experts, expect DIRECTVto firmly establish itself as the HDTV king as the company unveils its much-anticipated high-def expansion. HDTV writer Phil Swann (a.k.a. the Swanni, he tells us) said in 2007 DIRECTV will increase its national high-def lineup thanks to two new satellites dedicated largely to HD. Swann(i) said once the birds go up, DIRECTV will have more capacity than any other pay-TV provider.

Swann also said that once DIRECTV expands its capacity, the market will see a flurry of new HDTV channels launching in late spring or early summer. “Until now, a new HDTV channel has had to struggle to get a cable or satellite operator to add it,” he said. “But DIRECTV’s two new satellites will change that in a heartbeat; they will have room for all.” Likely candidates for HD launches, Swann said, could include CNN, E!, TBS, FX and The Sci-Fi Channel.

Other things the Swanni foresees in 2007 for HD: Cable operators will continue to drop analog channels to make room for HDTV, HDTV prices will continue to drop, Apple will introduce an HDTV service and multicasting will continue to struggle.’
